bad smell and metal crowns

I had a decayed tooth which caused a bad smell in my mouth. the dentist put a crown (porcelain and metal). After that I had a different type of bad breath, some weird taste like metallic)Another dentist told me that since they did not use gold in the crown but nickel, that causes the bad odor. IS this true? Can nickel alone cause really bad odor? Also I have another tooth with a crown that cracked, the dentist replaced the crown (with porcelain/gold crown) but did not do a root canal (although other dentist told me I needed it)The tooth still hurts sometimes and now i am really clueless; is the bad odor from the crown I did last year, or is ti from the crown I did this year, cause the tooth probably is still decayed and needs a root canal? I NEVER had bad breath in my life before, it all started last year with this decayed tooth, so I think it must be from something decayed in my teeth. THx!
