Sam, Odds are that the bad odor is coming from decay. The tooth you had re-crowned probably does need a root canal and that would be my guess as to where the odor is coming from. Most crowns with metal are made from different metal alloys and most of them contain nickle. I have never had any specific problem with nickle, but you never know each person is different. Gold would be a good choice for someone who may be sensitive to the other types of metal used. My suggestion to you would be to first have the root canal tooth looked at especially if it is still causing you pain from time to time. Hopefully that is where the mystery lies and you won't have to second guess the first crown placed. PLease feel free to give us a call in the office to set up an appointment to evaluate the tooth, and if you have any other questions regarding your dental health. We are open and in the office Monday through Thursday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Good Luck, Dr. Nancy Khalaf
