Steve, What you are talking about is a post and core build-up for the crown. It is completely safe, and extremely common. When the structure of the tooth is compromised, you need to add structure to the tooth- a post and core build-up- so you can put a crown on the tooth. If for some reason down the road you have this same problem, any dentist should have no problem dealing with the post. To answer your previous question about this being possible, absolutely. It is sometimes impossible to see what is under the crown without x rays, and sometimes you still won't be able to see the decay without removing the crown. When decay is found under the crown you need to remove the crown and decay before doing anything else. It sounds like you are in good hands, and should proceed with treatment. Regards, Dr. Nancy Khalaf
