Crowns

A crown is a recovery process that covers, or "caps," a tooth to its normal shape and size, strengthening and improving the appearance of that tooth. When a tooth no longer appears strong or looks out of shape or broken down it may be time to consider a crown. Root canals, lost fillings, decay below a filling, chipping and cracking of the enamel are all things that can lead to large scale defects in a tooth's surface. Crowns are also used to support a large filling when there isn't enough of the tooth remaining, attach a bridge, protect weak teeth from fracturing, restore fractured teeth, or cover badly shaped or discolored teeth. When it appears that the entire surface of the tooth is a problem, but the root system is intact, a crown might be just what the dentist orders.

  • Tooth crowns add strength, durability and tooth stability.

Many contributing factors can lead to the disintegration, wearing down, cracking or breakage of your teeth i.e., grinding your teeth, an improper bite, age, fillings and tooth decay. Dental Crowns cover the entire visible surface of your affected tooth. If you feel that you may require an examination to see if you require crown, e-mail Dr. Nancy Khalaf at nkhalaf@baysfdental.com.

  • You may be a candidate for tooth crowns.

Dr. Nancy Khalaf an San Francisco native qualified Bay Area dentist will usually be able to spot problem areas in your mouth that may lead to tooth damage and a need for crowns. Factors such as your chewing patterns play a big role as well. If you are prone to grinding the tips of your middle and back teeth (cusps) will alter your bite to reduce the stress on at-risk teeth. If you feel that you may require an examination to see if you require crown, e-mail Dr. Nancy Khalaf at nkhalaf@baysfdental.com.

A missing tooth may also be a reason to consider a crown. Crowns are anchored to your teeth on either side, with a bridge section connecting the two crowns. Instead of bridges, single tooth dental implants may be used that eliminate the need for supporting the crowns. If you feel that you may require an examination to see if you require crown, e-mail Dr. Nancy Khalaf at nkhalaf@baysfdental.com.

  • Tooth crowns are usually cemented to your tooth.

Dr. Nancy Khalaf an expert cosmetic dentist will make an impression of your tooth to create the crown. This process will take about two weeks. Then the permanent crown is cemented onto your tooth. this process should typically take about two visits. Please be aware that often, a restoration of your tooth may be needed before a crown can be placed. To stabilize your tooth, a filling must first be put in place prior to placing a crown due to the loss of original tooth structure. If you feel that you may require an examination to see if you require crown, e-mail Dr. Nancy Khalaf at nkhalaf@baysfdental.com.

  • Gold, ceramic crowns and ceramic-veneered gold crowns

Gold & metal-ceramic crowns are probably the most durable and are used in molars, where the forces from chewing and grinding are most prevalent. Ceramic crowns are used primarily for front teeth, since they can best resemble the natural tooth color. If you feel that you may require an examination to see if you require crown, e-mail Dr. Nancy Khalaf at nkhalaf@baysfdental.com.

  • Resin and porcelain crowns are nice in appearance.

This crown can be made from pure ceramic or a new reinforced composite resin, and appears like a natural tooth. This bonding process provides an strong bond to your tooth and is metal-free.When repairing your back teeth with bonding, Dr. Nancy Khalaf will perform a tooth colored only. This type of procedure is used to correct only those parts of the tooth that are in need and is also a metal-free process. If you feel that you may require an examination to see if you require crown, e-mail Dr. Nancy Khalaf at nkhalaf@baysfdental.com.

Gold Crowns VS. Porcelain Fused To Metal Crowns

If your not so much into appearance gold crowns may be appropriate. The gold metal is extremely workable making gold crowns a more precise fit than any other type. Gold can also be quite costly. While there exists a slight possibility of chipping with porcelain crowns, gold crowns wear more like normal teeth, without harming surrounding teeth.

Porcelain crowns look more like a natural teeth. However, they have a metal substructure and require an opaque below the porcelain. This can make the transparency appearance of the natural teeth difficult to replicate. Occasionally a darker line will be visible at the edge of the crown, near to your gum when it recedes with age. If you feel that you may require an examination to see if you require crown, e-mail Dr. Nancy Khalaf at nkhalaf@baysfdental.com.
